Fisheries News: Winter months are great for Sheepshead fishing Thursday, February 16, 2006 (857 reads)
Want to catch a mess of great-tasting fish right now? Just stop at your nearest bait shop for a pound or two of market shrimp and be prepared for some non-stop sheepshead action. A lead-head jig, tipped with market shrimp and bumped slowly on the bottom is the key to filling an ice chest with these tasty “Rondeau Sunbream”. Sheepshead run 2-8 pounds, but can reach as much as 20 pounds. They are excellent table fare, but care must be taken when cleaning the fish due to their sharp spines. I find it helpful to use thick gloves to minimize puncture wounds and to score the outline of the fillet on both sides with a hook-bladed carpet knife before using the fillet knife. This keeps the fillet knife sharp.

As we watch the football and volleyball season come to a close, we also have a few more opening. This week, soccer and basketball gets its tip/kick offs started. The season starts with many questions for these two sports. Will basketball provide more caliber action and attention from across the state again? Will soccer continue to provide good action for its freezing fans? Only time shall tell.
The Houma and surrounding area is represented by nine teams in Volleyball action. There is one question though, how did two teams from the same district get paired up in the first round of the playoffs? That is the main question being asked by most Volleyball supports out there. This week, Ponchatoula will travel to Assumption, Thibodaux travels to St. Joseph. Ellender will try to defeat Grace King in their home arena, Central Lafourche travels to take on #2 Mandeville, E.D. Boys Basketball Starts District, Girls have three way tie. Thursday, January 04, 2007 (504 reads)
In basketball action, district gets start on the boys side this week. Ellender, South Lafourche, and Terrebonne are all tied at 3-0 on the girls side. While their is still plenty to be determined in this sport with a long district season ahead, there is one thing that is for sure, there will be no rain outs!
Once again it looks like the rain may catch part of the soccer district match up Friday night, which has to make people wonder, how will they finish the season? With over half of district play gone, and some teams still needing to make up district games already, it can throw a hole into the standing near the end. The Terrebonne girls seems like they will run away with the title. On the boys side, South Terrebonne and Central Lafourche are both tied at 5-0, with a district game to make up against each other.

Basketball District Starts, Soccer Heats up Wednesday, December 20, 2006 (447 reads)
Basketball turns to their district schedule in this week's action, as the race for the district title is heating up. Their are always front runners when you turn to the action, however, we will have to wait until district starts to see who they are on the boys' side.
In Soccer, two teams have set themselves apart from the action in both boys and girls action. In the boys, South Terrebonne and Central Lafourche look to be the front runners as they are the two undefeated teams in district play. Central Lafourche will host South Terrebonne Friday night at 7:00. This will be one of the most entertaining games of the season. The surprise on the boys side is Thibodaux. Thibodaux soccer program has started heading in the right direction as they have posted close losses with Central Lafourche and South Terrebonne, after having big losses to these teams in years past.
In girls action, Terrebonne and Central Lafourche seem to be battleing it out for the district title. These programs seem to compete year after year with each other, and this year is no different. Last year the scores of there games were 1-0, 0-0 (4-2 Pks) in favor of Terrebonne both times. Look forward to seeing that good match up once again.

Seperate the Pretender from the Contenders Monday, January 08, 2007 (498 reads)
It is that part of the season where it is time for the District Pretenders to seperate themselves from the Contenders. While the Basketball race continues to be close, so does the soccer. The only district race that is not close is the girl's soccer race as #6 ranked Terrebonne Tigers are pulling away from the pack. The only real threat they will face is Central Lafourche, who they beat 3-0 in the first round.
While the race seems to be unclear, the skies are seeming to clear out the way so things can clear up in the district matches. Hopefully we shall see some more good match up as you take a week at this week's action!

Vandebilt Boy's Soccer in State Finals and Look to Make History Wednesday, February 21, 2007 (474 reads)
After starting off as one of the favorites in Division II soccer, Vandebilt started 4-11-1 and was barely considered a top ten team by a lot of people in the state after their first 16 games. Vandebilt quickly turned their fortunes around though, and are now playing for their 5th title in the past 6 years.
Not only will Vandebilt be looking to take home the title, but if they do so, it will make history. No team, in any division, has ever won 3 consecutive soccer state championships. Many powerhouses such as Jesuit and Brother Martin have also had opportunities to do this, but never succeeded.
Continuing with the odd facts of this matchup, their opponent, East Ascension...

It was a warm evening in early May, and a perfect night for baseball, as the Colonels baseball team took the field against LSU. As the teams were preparing to begin the game, the Tigers took time out to honor there four seniors. One of these seniors was the Tigers starting picture, Clay Dirks, #13, who led the Tigers for 6 2/3 innings before he received a very honorable round-of-applauds as he left Alex Box Field for the last time.
The Tigers started the scoring in the second inning as #18, Nick Pontiff, scored off of senior, Steven Broschofsky's, double. However, this would not go unanswered, as Nicholls' John Beauchamp, #6, hit a RBI single in the top of the 4th inning.

Fisheries News by Dave: Crawfish Outlook Sunday, February 25, 2007 (505 reads)
Fisheries News
By David A. Bourgeois
Crawfish Outlook for 2007
Whether you like them fried, boiled or in a stew, crawfish are a Louisiana favorite. And for the next several months, crawfish can be found on dinner tables and in backyard boils across the state. For consumers, the good news is that 2007 has brought a new crop, which at this time is ahead of last year’s season.
Crawfishing in Louisiana conjures up images of people maneuvering boats through sloughs and bayous. In reality, most of Louisiana’s crawfish production comes from ponds located in southwest and south central Louisiana. About 1,200 crawfish producers cultivate more than 116,000 acres. About 70 million pounds of pond-raised crawfish are caught, with an economic value of more than $40 million. Much of the wild crawfish crop consists of catches in the Atchafalaya Basin. Nearly 1,100 fishermen harvest more than 8 million pounds of wild crawfish with an economic value of nearly $5 million.

District Starts for Many Teams in the Area Monday, December 11, 2006 (419 reads)
It seems like all it takes of a blink of an eye, and you miss all the action. There is no doubt that is true, especially when it comes to high school sports. It was just the other week when we were welcoming the opening of Basketball and Soccer to High School Prep action. This week is basically a reoccurence of that, just with a little bit of emphasis this time. District action starts Tuesday night and it is do or die time for these teams. In order to keep their playoffs hopes alive, they must win in district where it matters.
With the Saints pulling around a 3-13 season, and being a legit playoff contender just goes to show that any team can take it out there. While this is less common in professional sports, it is not the same in high school. We can easily see a contender rise amongst the misk and take this years title. With that, here is a look at this week's action:

HLB is “Going to the Ship” Wednesday, March 26, 2008 (952 reads)
By: Robert Barrilleaux, Jr.
HL Bourgeois entered this year playoffs ranked 13th in the state, but even though they may have been ranked in the middle of the playoff pack they have played evenly with every top tier team they have faced in the playoffs so far. However, they entered Thursday’s night game with their toughest test yet as they faced #1 Huntington High in the LHSAA Top 28 tournament held in Lafayette’s Cajun Dome.
This semi final contest began as both teams started neck in neck, leading to a 10 to 15 score in favor of Huntington at the end of the first quarter. This would be the story for most of the second as well, as it ended with HL on top 29 to 25. The second half started hot for HL as their guards got the touch and started to drain their shots that just seemed not to fall in the 1st half. With the game winding down Huntington, lead by Kendrick Washington, #40, with his 22 points and 16 rebounds and by Corey Ellis, #10, who had 16 points, just couldn’t seem to keep up with the Brave’s speed and fast breaks. The game came to a close with a score of 59 to 71 in favor of Bourgeois. This final score was set as Stevie Howard, #15, threw up an ally oop to Tramel White, #32, in the closing seconds of the game.
